Sunday Jul 25, 2021
Sunday Jul 25, 2021
The Tokyo 2020 Olympics are finally here after a COVID-19 inflicted delay in 2020. The Olympics are the pinnacle of world sport and being the sports fanatics we are at TRIAX we had to give our best preview for the global event.
In this episode of the DeakHeads podcast the boys preview the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, mostly from a biased Australian point of view. The boys talk about some of their previous Olympic memories from Sydney 2000, to Athens, Beijing, London, Rio and now Tokyo.
There's also plenty of discussion on some sports that are unlucky not to be played in the Olympics (hello Netball & Darts), as well as our tips and athletes to watch out for. Watch out for the boys medal predictions and our absolute locks for an Australian gold medal.
The empty stands in the COVID-era is also discussed by the boys and how that may impact athletic performance in what is a completely different Olympics to what we are used to

EPISODE 14: Is Social Media Negatively Impacting Athlete Mental Health?
Saturday Jun 19, 2021
Saturday Jun 19, 2021
The rise of social media means that athletes are more accessible than ever, with fans having greater access than any previous generation. This has resulted in positive moments between fans and athletes and warm displays of generosity. However, we have also seen too much negative use of social media with fans and pundits attacking the performances and appearances of elite athletes. Countless instances exist where athletes have been abused by people behind keyboards and screens with no real consequence for their actions. Athletes have been subjected to this treatment on a global scale given the increased access fans have to sport in the current day. Unfortunately athlete mental health has suffered. Athletes received negative messages and commentary based upon their performance and unfair scrutiny from people who would never say these things to their face. With the rise in accessibility and popularity of gambling, many punters share their frustrations over losses to the athletes themselves. Whilst many athletes suffer poor mental health from tabloid articles and narratives pushed from journalists to suit an agenda. After the 2021 French Open and Naomi Osaka's withdrawal following refusal to attend a press conference, athlete mental health has recently been in the spotlight. In this episode of the TRIAX10, Damo and Rob talk about the negative influences that social media has had on athlete's mental health and also the commercial conundrum that many athletes and governing bodies face going forward. Undoubtedly sport is business and the money paid to athletes is generated from commercial access via the way of broadcast deals, press conferences and sponsorships. There must be a give and take with this process.
Highlights:
- Discussion surrounding the negative aspects of social media on athlete health
- Athlete obligations in the post match press conferences
- Conundrum facing athletes given the impact the commercial dollar has on prizemoney/salary
- The rise of social media as a tool for 24/7 scrutiny of athletes and their performances

EPISODE 13: Mental Health for Young Coaches During COVID-19
Saturday Jun 19, 2021
Saturday Jun 19, 2021
Breaking into the elite sports industry as a young strength and conditioning coach or sport scientist is tough as it is. There's limited positions available and the competition for employment is fierce. That's without a pandemic. With COVID-19 throwing sports around the globe into chaos, young strength and conditioning coaches and sports scientists are finding it increasingly difficult to pay the bills. Young practitioners usually require casual employment around their studies or a series of casual jobs to make ends meet. For undergraduate exercise and sport science students, the final years of study usually require the completion of internships to be eligible to graduate. This process has been made a whole lot harder by the COVID-19 pandemic. Young practitioners may have seen their career progression stalled by a pandemic where they cannot complete internships or placements in person and are left to resort to online coaching. Coaching repetitions are needed in person rather than online, so it's a tough predicament to be in at the moment. There's only so much you can do to build your skills behind a screen. Young coaches may feel like their career progress may have been delayed in an already highly competitive industry. We undoubtedly sympathise. In this episode of the TRIAX10, Damo and Rob talk about the mental health difficulties and challenges faced by young practitioners given the current COVID-19 landscape. The boys also share their thoughts on what those impacted can do to continue to build their skillset.
Highlights:
- Damo navigates the current landscape for young sport science students and the likely challenges they are currently experiencing.
- The difficulties surrounding casual employment during COVID lockdowns
- The mindset and concern for young practitioners
- What practitioners can do to continue to build their skillsets during lockdowns.

EPISODE 12: COVID-19 Bubble Life | Mental Health for Coaches
Thursday Jun 17, 2021
Thursday Jun 17, 2021
2020 was all about the COVID-19 pandemic. COVID decimated the elite sport industry with leagues all over the world impacted upon by the domestic and international border closures. Many leagues couldn't go ahead, whilst others were forced into COVID bubbles or hubs in order to allow the sport's competition to go ahead. Despite what you see on TV, being housed in a resort or luxury hotel isn't as glamorous as what many would expect. There's no real escape or detachment from your work and many are living away from their families. Athletes rightly take the attention, but it's the coaching and support staff that have unique challenges that see an equal burden being carried. In this TRIAX10 (which really goes for 15-minutes), Damon and Rob talk about their experiences in elite sporting bubbles and being relocated to continue their respective seasons. The boys touch upon their mental health and how they felt to be involved in such unique circumstances.
Highlights:
- The COVID-19 hotel/quarantine environment
- The burdens placed upon coaching and support staff
- Living restrictions faced by those in the bubble
- Mental Health during the bubble
- Personal challenges they experienced
- Assimilating back into society after the bubble

TRIAX 180 #5: Is Foam Rolling Beneficial or a Waste of Time?
Tuesday Apr 27, 2021
Tuesday Apr 27, 2021
The introduction of foam rolling took the fitness and gym industry by storm. The ability to foam roll as a form of self massage allowed athletes to take greater control of their athletic preparation.
Foam rolling for runners, weightlifters, footballers and basically any other physical endeavour seems to be appropriate. But does foam rolling actually help performance and recovery?
Firstly, foam rolling is a form of self-manual therapy where the athlete uses their own body-weight to apply pressure to soft tissues structures. The suggested physiological benefits of foam rolling surround the idea of “self-myofascial release” (SMR). SMR attempts to reduce “tightness” in the myofascial complex (myo = muscle, fascia = soft tissue). Tightness restricts range of motion which is then believed to reduce blood flow.
Foam rolling is suggested to improve range of motion by softening the tissue and enabling greater blood flow. There's many different questions associated with foam rolling but there's not much concrete evidence out there to guide our decision making.
That's why in the latest TRIAX180 debate, the boys discuss foam rolling as a tool to help with our performance.

TRIAX 180 #4: Internships vs. Post-Grad Study
Friday Apr 16, 2021
Friday Apr 16, 2021
Sport Science careers aren't like your typical 9am-5pm jobs. Jobs are highly competitive, sought after and unfortunately not in high demand. That's why starting a career out in Sport Science is tough..
Upon finishing a Bachelor’s degree, there is no real pathway to employment, particularly in the elite sector. Many sport science graduates are often stuck at the end of their degree due to the limited opportunities available and the shear volume of sport science graduates that are pumped out of Australian universities alone. It's a difficult path to navigate, given university marketing is aimed at targeting students towards working in the elite sector, when in Australia, the jobs just aren't there.
As TRIAX is comprised of three sport science graduates, we know how hard it is to try and grind out a career straight out of university. You're often left with only two options after your Bachelors degree. You either go back to university and try and further your education through an Honours, Masters or PhD, or you try your luck with some more internships and pray that they lead you towards employment..
But sometimes it's hard to find an internship that is actually worth your time and provides you with as much value in return relative to your efforts. Then again, going down a Masters path isn't as exclusive as it used to be and now many have Masters degrees but no viable employment opportunities. Some sport science students will even abandon their initial career dreams by moving into more stable clinical roles such as Physiotherapy, osteopathy or clinical exercise physiology.
It's a tough spot - we get it. That's why our latest TRIAX180 debate is all about Sport Science internships vs Postgraduate study for successfully developing your sport science career.
