EPISODE 28: Australian Paralympic Medallists don‘t get paid? WTF?
Thursday Sep 02, 2021
Thursday Sep 02, 2021
Australian Paralympic athletes were not paid in prize money or bonuses if they won a medal at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.
Until a few hours ago....
Unlike their Australian Olympic counterparts, Australian Paralympians were originally not offered prize money as bonuses for winning medals at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics. That was until Scott Morrison made an announcement in Australian Parliament today stating that all Australian Paralympic medallists would receive the same prize money amount as the Olympic athletes. That's a win.
Of course when we filmed this podcast episode, this was before the Australian Federal Government announcement...
However there's still a lot of good discussion points in this episode from Damo & Rob.

EPISODE 26: WHY WAS AUSTRALIA SUCCESSFUL AT TOKYO 2020?
Friday Aug 13, 2021
Friday Aug 13, 2021
The Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games were the equal most successful Olympics for any Australian team at the summer Olympics. Australia was only tied with their performance in Athens in 2004.
What a turnaround we saw from the Australian Olympic Team in Tokyo compared to the Rio 2016 Olympics where the nation could only secure 8 gold medals.
In Tokyo, the Australian swim team won 9... to eventually lead Australia to a record equalling 17-gold medals across the Olympiad. But why was there such an improvement compared to the results of Rio?
How did Australia manage to turn it around? Well in this episode of the DeakHeads podcast, Damon & Rob attempt to unpack the Australian Olympic performance and try to identify some of the factors that aided in Australia's success. Some of the topics discussed include:
-The introduction of Australia's "Winning Edge" program
- The decentralisation of the Australian Institute of Sport
- The power given back to National Sporting Organisations to facilitate the Olympic success of the sport
- The success of the Australian Institute of Sport Gold Medal Ready Program
- Peer Gold Medal support from former gold medallists
- The impact of COVID-19 on the ability to train consistently for Australian athletes
- The influence of the restructuring of national programs following Rio 2016
- How the decentralisation allowed Australian athletes to prosper going into Tokyo 2020.

EPISODE 25: TOP 10 Australian Olympic Moments | Tokyo 2020
Thursday Aug 12, 2021
Thursday Aug 12, 2021
The Tokyo 2020 Olympics have officially come to an end (sigh). But we needed to have one last review of the COVID-19-impacted Olympics - if you can even call it that.
The Australian Olympic Team had a massive Tokyo games! An equal best with Athens for Gold Medals (17), which more than doubled our haul from Rio. The Swimmers led the way, with the Mac's in Emma McKeon and Kaylee McKeown leading the charge in the pool with everyone's favourite in Ariarne Titmus defeating the American champ, Katie Ledecky.
Needless to say, it was a tough task for the boys to cut down all their best moments from Tokyo 2020 into one top 10 list. We don't want to reveal too much more before you check out our list! But make sure you tell us what you think!
The boys also revealed their winners for their awards, taking into account the heartbreaks, best performances and best efforts of the games.
See you in Paris 2024!

The Tokyo 2020 Olympics will forever be known as the first event in which Australia broke their medal drought for men's basketball. Mills didn't do it alone - Dante Exum was huge across the four quarters, whilst Matisse Thybulle painted another defensive masterpiece against the formidable Luka Doncic. Nick Kay, Jock Landale and Joe Ingles all chimed in to help secure the Bronze for Australia.

EPISODE 23: Tokyo 2020 Olympics Wrap Up | Days 11-13
Saturday Aug 07, 2021
Saturday Aug 07, 2021
You win some, you lose some.
For Australia the last couple of days, we've suffered some heartbreak at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics. The Boomers lost against Team USA Men's Basketball in the semi-finals, despite being up by 15 points. The Matildas also lost to Team USA, 4-3 in the Bronze Medal match. Our beach volleyball girls in Clancy & Artacho Del Solar lost the gold medal match to the USA. It's been a rough rivalry with the might of Team USA.
But we also won gold in the skateboarding with Keegan Palmer, gold in the 470 dinghy with Matt Belcher and Will Ryan and gold in the Canoe Sprint with Tom Green and Jean van der Westhuyzen. So it's not all bad.
In fact, the highlight of the last couple of days could be seen on the athletics track. A marvellous effort from Peter Bol in the men's 800m, followed by a bronze medal to Ashley Moloney. But the sportsmanship and comradery from Cedric Dubler to help Moloney get the bronze in the 1500m is what Australia is all about.
But geez the boys were flat in the latest recap episode. We hope you can join them and help create a safe space where we can share our angst and help put the last couple of days behind us.
Highlights in this episode include:
- Breaking down the decathlon in terms of performance and recovery
- Plenty of lowlights surrounding the Australian teams
- Plenty of basketball chat
- Group admiration for Peter Bol
Some of our athlete discussion includes (Australian bias):
- Peter Bol
- Australian Boomers
- Kookaburras
- Matildas
- Matt Belcher and Will Ryan 470 Laser Dinghy
- Boomers
- Melissa Wu
- Kareena Lee
- Harry Garside
- Keegan Palmer
- Ashley Moloney and Cedric Dubler
- Team USA and Kevin Durant

EPISODE 22: Australian Boomers vs. Team USA Recap | Tokyo 2020 Olympics
Saturday Aug 07, 2021
Saturday Aug 07, 2021
Let us paint you a little picture. A recap, if you will.
2020 Tokyo Olympics, Men's Basketball Semi Finals. The Australian Boomers vs the might of Team USA.
The Boomers are led by Patty Mills, Dante Exum, Jock Landale, Matisse Thybulle, Nick Kay, Joe Ingles. Team USA have the likes of Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, Damian Lillard, Bam Adebayo, Jayson Tatum, Khris Middleton and Jrue Holiday.
Australia were up by 15 points midway through the second quarter. Ball movement, outside shooting and stout defensive plays had Australian fans dreaming of the biggest upset in their country's basketball history and the certainty of their first Olympic medal. Chris Goulding hit 2 threes in what seems like as many possessions.
Australia was rolling. But Kevin Durant was also rolling. KD kept Team USA in the ball game and evaporated the Australian dominance for the first quarter and a half. After half-time, it was one way traffic for Team USA on the way to another gold medal game.
Whilst for the Boomers, the uncertainty of playing in another bronze medal game has left us all with nightmares about finishing fourth for the 6th time in international competition. The task doesn't get much easier for Australia as they now play in the Bronze medal match against Luka Doncic and Slovenia...
Some of our discussion includes:
- Australia's fast start
- Disappointing second half
- Potential Boomers for 2024 Paris Olympics
- What we would have done as armchair coaches
- How to stop Kevin Durant
- How to stop Luka Doncic
- The aura of the American teams
- The crafty coaching from Gregg Popovich
- How much Australia missed Aron Baynes

EPISODE 21: Tokyo 2020 Olympics Wrap Up | Days 8-10
Tuesday Aug 03, 2021
Tuesday Aug 03, 2021
We're at three quarter time for the Tokyo 2020 Olympics! But the medals keep rolling in for the Australian's and boy are we pumped at TRIAX!
Andrew Hoy, the 8-time Olympian again showed his equestrian prowess, taking out a silver and bronze medal in the one day! Not bad for a 60-something horseman!!
Emma McKeon has tied Ian Thorpe for the most Gold Medals in Australian Olympic history and now has the most medals of any Australian Olympian of all time! Go Emma! Whilst Kaylee McKeown won the 100/200m backstroke double, capped off with a sensational win in the 4x100m medley relay!
Again, the last couple of days have seen some agony and ecstasy in the Australian sporting landscape. The Matilda's lost in heart-breaking circumstances in the semi finals to Sweden, whilst the Hockeyroos were shocked by India in the Field Hockey quarterfinals.
Rob's favourite moment was Ash Barty and John Peers picking up a Bronze medal for literally nothing. Thanks to the withdrawal of Novak Djokovic, Barty/Peers won a bronze medal in a walkover in the mixed doubles.
Discussion also focuses on the high jump final and the controversy surrounding the awarding of two gold medals. Also Damon and Rob examine some of the athletes who don't mind rocking some big sunglasses or accessories to increase their swag game.

The Australians continued their dominance in the pool with gold medals for Mckeon, Stubblety-Cook and McKeown, silver for Titmus and Chalmers and bronze for Cate Campbell, the women's 4x200m relay and the mixed 4x100m medley.
Australia's golden girl Jess Fox also turned around her heartbreak from the K1 final to secure gold in the C1 in a blistering performance! And how about the performance from the Matildas!! Knocking off the poms in an electrifying extra time classic
It hasn't been all smiles despite these successes with heartbreak for Ash Barty and John Peers losing in the tiebreak set in the tennis mixed doubles. The Australian Opals have also been disappointing dropping back-to-back games against Belgium and China

EPISODE 19: Tokyo 2020 Olympics Wrap Up | Day 5
Thursday Jul 29, 2021
Thursday Jul 29, 2021
We were only going to make a couple of Olympic videos, but we've been swept up in something more contagious than the COVID-19 pandemic... Australian Olympic Fever!! We love it!!
Damo and Rob are back for another review episode of the Day 5 that was. An Australian gold rush unseen since the 1850's in Ballarat, Victoria!! Ariarne Titmus again knocked off Katie Ledecky, whilst Goulburn Valley were swiftly on the phone to the Oarsome Foursomes in both the Women's and Men's Fours. We don't like silver in Australia so we helped ourselves to a few more Bronze medals. Rob's man Rohan Dennis got the job done in the Men's Time Trial, whilst a couple more Bronze's in rowing and one in the swimming rounded out an historic day for the Australian Olympic team! It wasn't all medals for the Australian's however.
There was some heartbreak in the boxing ring for our girl Skye Nicolson cutting up the onions for the Australian public following her heart-breaking quarterfinal loss. Heart-break on the doubles court in tennis as well with Ash Barty and Storm Sanders going down in the quarterfinals in a match tie-break!
