EPISODE 38: Why Rob QUIT Social Media
Monday Dec 13, 2021
Monday Dec 13, 2021
Each Sunday morning can be pretty ominous and in more ways than one. It's nerve wracking and fills you with dread.
You hear a buzz. It's your iPhone. Through squinted eyes you pick up your phone and quickly find yourself overcome with shame.
The weekly screen time notification.
It gives a new meaning to the Sunday scaries.
Rob has recently decided to give up two forms of social media: Facebook and Instagram. There wasn't a major reason or event that instigated Rob to do this. It was mainly a feeling that his life and time was being meaninglessly consumed by social media and the endless scrolling that ensues.
We thought we'd sit down and chat a bit more about why Rob decided to do this and some of the positive and negatives that have come with it.
This is a really interesting discussion and worth a listen regardless of if you are considering reducing your screen time or not!
Topics discussed:
– Why Rob decided to delete his Facebook and Instagram accounts
– The benefits of reducing social media usage and what Rob uses his extra time for
– The things Rob has missed out on and how this has affected him
– How Rob would approach deleting social media if he had his time again
– What Rob was accused of by some of his friends

EPISODE 37: What Happens When You Mix Yoga with the Pfizer Vaccine?
Monday Dec 06, 2021
Monday Dec 06, 2021
The last 2 years have been full of talk surrounding COVID-19 and vaccines, but rest assured, we're not here to add to that. Instead, we gave the stage to Rob who describes his experiences following his first dose of the Pfizer vaccine.
In the days before receiving his vaccine, Rob decided that yoga would be his new hobby. Rob was feeling revitalised, recommending that every man, woman and their dog take up yoga as well. But suddenly, this yoga participation had some somewhat adverse effects on Rob's physical condition and mental stability.
For Rob, this lead to a week filled with terror and panic. For Sean and Damo, while some empathy was directed Rob's way, the reaction was pure amusement.
For a free shot at ridiculing Rob, you must listen to this episode of the DeakHeads podcast. You may feel sorry for Rob, you may laugh at him. Honestly, you're probably right either way but we'll let you be the judge.

![EPISODE 36: Velocity Based Training (VBT) & Metric with Jacob Tober](https://pbcdn1.podbean.com/imglogo/image-logo/9719252/DeakHeads2_300x300.jpg)

EPISODE 36: Velocity Based Training (VBT) & Metric with Jacob Tober
Monday Oct 25, 2021
Monday Oct 25, 2021
Velocity based training (VBT) has been simply put as an objective method of analyzing the intensity of a particular exercise. VBT has grown to prominence and can be used to evaluate how well an athlete performed an exercise (e.g., Squat, Deadlift, Bench Press) and even used as a prescription tool for reps and sets.
There's a lot of confusion surrounding the term VBT and even the name might not be that accurate to reflect what velocity based training actually is. We can think of VBT as a method that uses the velocity of movement to guide training. But instead of speculating about VBT, we thought we'd get an expert in to explain VBT with us (and also talk about their brilliant new app).
It's only taken a year, but the TRIAX boys have their first special guest on the DeakHeads podcast...
Jacob Tober, a strength and conditioning coach and sport scientist was gracious enough to come on the DeakHeads podcast to talk all things Velocity based training (VBT). Jacob is the head of research and education at Metric, a revolutionary velocity based training app. Metric enables lifters and coaches to accurately track velocity, range of motion and power using just their smartphone camera. Jacob has also worked as a strength and conditioning coach at Core Advantage Athletic Development since 2013.
In this podcast the TRIAX boys and Jacob discuss:
- What is Velocity Based Training
- Velocity based training explained
- How VBT can be used in preseason and in-season
- How VBT can be incorporated into the gym program
- Using VBT alongside other markers of athlete readiness/wellness (e.g., RPE)
- Preparing for your preseason on the back of the COVID hiatus
- The Metric App: how it can be used to incorporate VBT into your program and help you as a coach/athlete
- Misconceptions of VBT

EPISODE 35: We Ran a Half Marathon with NO TRAINING
Thursday Oct 21, 2021
Thursday Oct 21, 2021
You don't start training for a marathon the night before it starts. But what about a half-marathon? Well, that might be a different story.
In this episode of the DeakHeads podcast, Sean and Damo attempted a half-marathon with little to no training.
That's right. A couple of exercise and sport science professionals attempted a half-marathon with hardly any training. Can you actually complete a half-marathon with little to no training. Ideally, no. You should not attempt a half marathon without a solid block of aerobic training. But sometimes you just have to go out there and give it a shot. Sean and Damo both completed the 21km in around two hours. Were they sore? Yes. Should they have completed an actual training program? Yes.
But in was also in the spirit of a very worth cause. Chris Ross, former Frankston VFL High Performance Manager was recently diagnosed with Motor Neuron Disease at the young age of 31. The Frankston VFL community got around Rossy and raised over $100k for him and his family. A sensational effort. Sean also raised approximately $1500 himself. A commendable feat and one he should be extremely proud of himself for.
In this video:
- The boys talk about how they felt during different stages of the half-marathon
- The points during the race when they felt they couldn't finish the 21km
- How they felt after the race
- What they did to recover from the half-marathon
- How they would train for a half-marathon going forward
- What you need to think about when training for your own half marathon
- Should you do strength training for running?

EPISODE 33: Sean‘s Mental Health Journey
Sunday Oct 10, 2021
Sunday Oct 10, 2021
**TW: Mental Health**
On the back of R U OK day, the boys get together to chat all things mental health in light of World Mental Health Day on October 10th– a day for mental health education, awareness and advocacy. In this episode of the DeakHeads podcast, Sean openly shares his experiences with depression in the hopes that it might help someone struggling through similar circumstances
Hearing others be open about their own mental health was one of the drivers in Sean speaking up and sourcing some help for his struggles. Speaking up is only a small part of the process and there are many moving parts when dealing with mental ill-health within yourself or those you love.
Sean also touches on some strategies that help his mental health, as well as the steps he took to reach out and get help. While these are specific to Sean's circumstances, we hope that you might gain something beneficial as well. Going about this alone is bloody tough and the more help you can get or stories you can hear the better
We really hope you gain something meaningful from this conversation, and as always if you are struggling, please reach out to a friend, family member, mentor, or even us – our inbox is always open!
Highlights:
– Sean's mental health journey to date
– Why it's so important to be open about mental ill-health
– Why going it alone doesn't work
– Strategies to get on top of your mental health
– How to support a loved one that isn't OK
– Steps to take if you are struggling

EPISODE 32: 2021 NFL Season Predictions
Thursday Sep 09, 2021
Thursday Sep 09, 2021
The NFL Season is just about to start, so we at TRIAX decided to try and preview the great American game with our wealth of experience...
Well Sean knows a lot about the NFL and Rob is more of a novice so it's not all bad. But what we do know for sure is that this season in the NFL is going to be must see TV.
Sean is a massive Patriots fan, whilst Rob is a die-hard Indianapolis Colts man - so there's a massive hatred between the two already. But in this video the boys try and predict and preview the upcoming NFL season. AFC and NFC standings are predicted as well as the Super Bowl teams, MVP, offense and defensive players of the year, rookies and even coach of the year!
Contrary to popular belief, there is no chat about Australian Punters in the league in this episode so look out for future episodes!
Patrick Mahomes seems like a common pick for MVP. The Chiefs seem like a lock for a Super Bowl berth, whilst there's plenty of hype surrounding the San Francisco 49ers.
Let us know your predictions for the upcoming NFL season in the comments section.
Discussion Points:
- Sean's amazing ability to recall the past 20 years worth of MVP trophy winners from 100% pure memory
- Rob's Jon Gruden style visor
- Sean's Patriots Bias
- Rob's Colts Bias
- The hype surrounding the San Francisco 49ers
- The Miami Dolphins being the multi killers
- Not gambling on the first two weeks of the NFL season
- The difficulties in picking the low seeds in the NFC
- Coach of the Year decisions
- Our love of the Spider 2 Y Banana Play

EPISODE 31: R U OK? Day 2021
Wednesday Sep 08, 2021
Wednesday Sep 08, 2021
R U Ok? It's a simple question and unfortunately one that doesn't get asked enough. Given the strain of the COVID-19 Pandemic and the countless amounts of lockdowns that we all have endured within Australia, our mental health is as important as ever.
Each year in Australia the R U OK Day is held in September, raising awareness and starting actual conversations between friends, family and colleagues in maintain and improving mental health. In this special episode of the DeakHeads podcast, Damo and Rob sat down to have a genuine conversation about their own mental health and to check in on how each other is going.
There's some brief chat about how working in sport can impact upon your mental health, particularly when living in bubbles, but for the most part its two mates talking about some of their struggles over the past 12-18 months. We hope that this video can spark a conversation to those who watch it and hopefully the viewers can show initiative by checking in on someone they care about.

![EPISODE 30: Predicting the Boomers squad for the 2024 Paris Olympics](https://pbcdn1.podbean.com/imglogo/image-logo/9719252/DeakHeads2_300x300.jpg)

EPISODE 30: Predicting the Boomers squad for the 2024 Paris Olympics
Monday Sep 06, 2021
Monday Sep 06, 2021
We are still riding high off the Australian Boomers Bronze Medal win at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics! But the Paris 2024 Olympics are only three years away. So we decided (Rob mainly) to try and predict the Boomers 2024 Olympics Squad. *Spoiler Alert - It was really really tough.
It was tough because the Boomers are going through another transition phase. Joe Ingles, Patty Mills and Aron Baynes will all be at least 36 years old by the time Paris rolls around. There is no guarantee they will be in the green and gold by that stage. That means the younger boomers, such as the recent NBA Draftee to the Oklahoma City Thunder in Josh Giddey will have to assume a greater roll.
Guys such as the new San Antonio Spurs player in Jock Landale and other NBA players like Josh Green will have to fill the void! Of course, if Ben Simmons chooses to participate during the next Olympics you would have to assume he would be your next starting Point Guard. Hopefully Matisse Thybulle can push him to play in Paris! But there's also an interesting crop of younger Boomers that will soon catch the attention of the Australian public. Guys like Dysan Daniels, Tyrese Proctor and Mojave King have big futures in basketball.
One thing we hope is that Brian Goorjian can lead the Boomers again in Paris!

EPISODE 29: Equal prize money for Australian Paralympic Athletes
Friday Sep 03, 2021
Friday Sep 03, 2021
Australian Paralympic athletes are now paid in bonuses if they win a medal at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympic Games.
Before yesterday, Australian Paralympians were originally not offered prize money as bonuses for winning medals at the Tokyo 2020 Paralympics. Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison made an announcement in Australian Parliament yesterday stating that all Australian Paralympic medallists would receive the same prize money amount as the Olympic athletes.
That's a win.
